Cardo Communication Systems Made Simple

Cardo model names and accessory descriptions can be confusing at first. This guide explains what the system does, what each package includes and which model makes the most sense for the way you ride.

Cardo in One Sentence

A Cardo is a small wireless communication unit that attaches to your helmet and connects to speakers, a microphone, other riders and your smartphone.

What Can a Cardo System Do?

Rider Communication Talk with a passenger, riding partner or compatible group without making a phone call.
Navigation Hear turn-by-turn directions from a paired smartphone or compatible GPS device.
Music and Audio Listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks and supported radio features through helmet speakers.
Phone Calls Make or receive calls through a paired smartphone when conditions allow safe operation.

The Main Parts of a Cardo System

Component What It Does
Control Unit The electronic portion attached to the outside of the helmet. It contains the controls, battery, Bluetooth connection and intercom technology.
Speakers Install inside the helmet near the rider’s ears. They play intercom conversations, music, calls and navigation instructions.
Microphone Picks up the rider’s voice. Most complete kits include a wired microphone and a boom-style microphone for different helmet designs.
Helmet Mount Holds the control unit on the helmet. Depending on the model, this may be a clickable cradle or Cardo’s magnetic Air Mount.
Cardo Connect App Used to adjust settings, select audio profiles, manage supported connections and install software updates.

Does Cardo Intercom Require Cell Service?

No. Rider-to-rider intercom uses a direct wireless connection between compatible Cardo units. The basic intercom connection does not place a phone call and does not depend on cellular service.

A connected phone is still needed for phone calls, streaming music, app-based settings, traffic-enabled navigation and PACKTALK PRO Crash Detection.

Bluetooth Intercom vs. DMC Mesh

This is the most important difference between the Cardo model families.

Feature Bluetooth Intercom DMC Mesh Intercom
Used By SPIRIT and FREECOM families PACKTALK family
Best For One rider and passenger or two riders traveling together Larger groups or riders who frequently change positions
Group Structure Direct Bluetooth pairing between compatible units A flexible communication network shared by compatible DMC units
Reconnection Depends on the model and Bluetooth connection The mesh automatically adapts when riders leave and rejoin
Maximum Group Size Varies by model Up to 15 riders with PACKTALK Edge or PACKTALK PRO

Which Cardo System Should You Buy?

Model Riders Published Range Audio Best For
SPIRIT HD Up to 2 Up to 0.4 mile 40mm HD speakers Budget-conscious riders, passengers and basic phone, music or navigation use
FREECOM 2X Up to 2 Up to 0.5 mile 40mm JBL speakers Two riders who want better audio and a stronger two-person Bluetooth system
PACKTALK Edge Up to 15 Up to 1 mile between units 40mm JBL speakers Group rides, clubs, adventure riding and customers who want DMC mesh
PACKTALK PRO Up to 15 Up to 1 mile between units 45mm JBL speakers Premium road riders wanting larger speakers, Auto On/Off and supported Crash Detection

Choose SPIRIT HD When:

You mainly want music, phone calls, navigation or communication with one passenger or riding partner at an affordable price.

Choose FREECOM 2X When:

You only need communication between two people but want JBL audio and a longer published range than the SPIRIT HD.

Choose PACKTALK Edge When:

You ride with three or more people, regularly change positions within the group or simply want Cardo’s DMC mesh technology.

Choose PACKTALK PRO When:

You want PACKTALK Edge-level group communication with larger 45mm speakers, Auto On/Off and supported on-road Crash Detection.

Important PACKTALK PRO Crash-Detection Information

PACKTALK PRO Crash Detection is intended for supported on-road and paved motorcycle scenarios. It is not currently intended to serve as motocross, ATV, UTV or general off-road crash detection.

The feature requires a compatible smartphone, the Cardo Connect app, mobile data service, proper permissions and availability within a supported region. No automated system can detect every incident or guarantee delivery of an emergency notification.

What Do “Single” and “Duo” Mean?

Single Package

A Single package contains one complete communication system for one rider and one helmet.

A customer buying a Single unit can still talk with another rider, but the other rider must also have a compatible communication system.

Duo Package

A Duo package contains two complete communication systems for two riders and two helmets.

Duo packages are commonly purchased by couples, riding partners or a rider and passenger who both need complete systems.

Understanding Cardo Accessories

Accessory What It Includes What It Does Not Include
Second Helmet Kit Speakers, microphones, mount and installation hardware for another helmet It does not include another electronic Cardo control unit
Refreshment Kit Replacement adhesives, mounting pads, speaker covers and microphone covers It does not include speakers, microphones, a mount or a control unit
PACKTALK Edgephones Over-ear headset with JBL audio, microphone and magnetic Edge mount It does not include the PACKTALK Edge electronic control unit
Comfort-Fit Gel Cups Replacement comfort cups for compatible Edgephones They do not include Edgephones or a PACKTALK control unit

When Do You Need a Second Helmet Kit?

A second helmet kit is intended for one rider who owns two helmets. The speakers, microphone and mount remain installed in each helmet, while the electronic Cardo unit is moved from one helmet to the other.

It does not create a second working communication system because there is still only one electronic control unit.

The PACKTALK Pro/Edge second helmet kit includes 40mm JBL speakers. A complete PACKTALK PRO package includes larger 45mm JBL speakers, so audio performance may differ between the original PRO helmet installation and the second helmet.

How PACKTALK Edgephones Work

PACKTALK Edgephones are over-ear headphones designed for uses such as motocross coaching, pit communication, race support and off-road vehicle communication.

  1. The customer purchases or already owns a compatible PACKTALK Edge control unit.
  2. The Edge control unit attaches to the magnetic mount on the Edgephones.
  3. The Edgephones provide the speakers, microphone and over-ear fit.
  4. When needed, the same Edge control unit can be removed and returned to a compatible helmet installation.
Important: PACKTALK Edgephones do not include the electronic PACKTALK Edge control unit and do not replace a safety helmet where a helmet is required.

Common Buying Examples

“I ride alone and want music and GPS.” A Single SPIRIT HD is a practical starting point.
“My passenger and I want to talk.” Purchase two compatible units or a Duo package.
“My friend and I want better audio.” Consider a FREECOM 2X Single for each rider or a compatible Duo package.
“We ride in a group of five.” Each rider needs a compatible PACKTALK DMC unit. PACKTALK Edge is the natural starting point.
“I own a street helmet and an adventure helmet.” Purchase one complete compatible system and a matching second helmet kit.
“I need communication while coaching.” Use compatible PACKTALK Edgephones with a PACKTALK Edge control unit.

Can Cardo Connect to Other Brands?

Current Cardo systems support Bluetooth connections with compatible communication systems from other major brands. This can be useful when riding partners own different equipment.

Important distinction: Cross-brand connections use Bluetooth. Cardo’s full DMC mesh features only operate between compatible Cardo DMC systems. A mixed-brand group will not receive the full self-healing Cardo mesh experience.

What Is the Cardo Connect App?

The Cardo Connect app is the setup and control app for compatible Cardo communication systems. It does not replace the Cardo unit and is not the same thing as rider-to-rider intercom.

Adjust audio and volume settings
Select supported sound profiles
Install over-the-air software updates
Manage supported device and intercom settings

Basic Helmet Installation

  1. Remove or loosen the helmet comfort liner according to the helmet manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Position the speakers in the helmet’s ear pockets as close to the rider’s ears as practical.
  3. Choose the wired microphone for many full-face helmets or the boom microphone for many open-face, modular and off-road helmets.
  4. Install the appropriate clamp or adhesive mounting plate.
  5. Route the wires carefully beneath the comfort liner without placing them where they can create pressure points.
  6. Pair the unit, install available software updates and test the speakers and microphone before riding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does each rider need a Cardo?

Yes. Each person participating in the intercom conversation needs a compatible communication unit.

Does a Single package talk to another rider?

Yes, but the other rider must have their own compatible system. “Single” refers to the number of complete systems in the box.

Does a Duo package work for one rider with two helmets?

It can, but a second helmet kit is normally more economical when only one person will be using the system. A Duo includes two electronic control units.

Can I use Cardo just for music?

Yes. A rider can use a Cardo for smartphone audio, calls and navigation without connecting to another rider.

Is the maximum range guaranteed?

No. Published ranges represent maximum performance under suitable conditions. Terrain, trees, buildings, hills, rider position and electrical interference can reduce actual range.

Which model is the easiest recommendation?

SPIRIT HD is the value choice, FREECOM 2X is the upgraded two-person choice, PACKTALK Edge is the group-riding choice and PACKTALK PRO is the premium on-road choice.
